Heart to Heart: Your Business is not Going to Fall Apart in One Week

Tara Leson Episode 40

Remember how you started your business with thoughts of being your own boss, time freedom, and NOT having to ask anyone to take time off...
Then you actually became a business owner and somewhere between those initial dreams and actually being your own boss, the idea of taking time off or going on vacation seems completely out of reach.
Because now you own a business and how are you supposed to take any time away without everything falling apart?!?

We're going to have a heart to heart chat today.
About releasing some of that pressure and expectation.
Because the truth is, your business will be just fine.
You can take the time off.
Nothing is an emergency that you can't deal with when you get back.

And I'm going to tell you about the best systems to have set up to support you when you're gone. It's probably not what you think and will likely also take pressure off knowing you don't have to have everything perfect. Or do it all.

Speaker 1:

All right. So today I wanted to talk about something that's been coming up a little bit in different conversations with people and something that I've talked to one of my clients specifically a lot about lately, because she is going on a vacation right away, and I think this is something that is very interesting as business owners, especially because a lot of times we start our businesses and think this is going to be the ticket to like time, freedom and all of those good things and being able to like kind of not do whatever you want, but in essentially, in a way, you know you don't have your boss, you don't have to ask for time off, but then when you go to actually take time off, it's almost harder because there's this thought that we get in our heads that if we actually take that time off, our business is going to fall apart. Something's going to happen if we actually step away from the business. So how are you going to do it? How are you actually going to take that time away? And this is what I want to talk about today. It's going to be a little bit of a mindset shift as well as what you need to have in place and what you should have in place before you take a vacation, and I think you're going to be surprised at what I recommend. It's not probably what you think. So, first off, you did start a business to be able to have the time freedom, and this doesn't mean obviously you're not going on vacation like 100% of the time, otherwise you wouldn't have a business, right? You're not going to be doing it all the time. However, you can step away for a week and things will be fine. Nothing is going to fall apart. Everything will be fine, literally.

Speaker 1:

If you looked at nothing and you came back and you caught up with everything, or you looked at your messages, you looked at what was going on when you came back, it will be fine. People can wait, because the other thing is nothing in business is an emergency. Nothing is an emergency, 100% nothing there. You know there are times when I've even encountered this, where I have had previous clients that you know have kind of tested the boundaries and have and I wasn't on vacation but just texted me at different times when it was a little inappropriate, and you know we're kind of treating it as though they were having an emergency in their business and it's really not. It is not. It may seem like things are stressful, but it is not an emergency. But it is not an emergency. No one's dying, because I don't think that you run like a hospital or take care of critically ill patients Like that's not your business. So it's not an emergency. And I think it's easier maybe for me to say, just because of my background coming from this as an ICU nurse, like I can totally be, like you know, it's truly not, like it'll be fine, it will be fine, and you have got to give yourself time to step away at some point because otherwise you will burn out and it is okay.

Speaker 1:

And I want to talk about something that actually happened when one of my clients decided, you know, she had booked a vacation, she was going on this vacation. She told her client she was doing this and one of them really didn't like it. They really did not like that she was going on vacation. And this is something that maybe you will encounter sometime. You may encounter this, and so my perspective on this is that first, that's bad shit, crazy, and I want you to really think about this. And obviously she did not tell that client that.

Speaker 1:

But I really want you to think about this because some people will be going through things and they just can't. They can't have an appropriate reaction and you cannot control other people's reactions. So there's that. I mean you can only control your own. You can only control your own what you say, and people will react how they do and you can't control that and sometimes it is totally unhinged and not honestly on the realm of reality. That happens.

Speaker 1:

However, if, if you ever find yourself in this situation because I know that, you know we had to work through this quite a bit, because it was really I think that this is a stressful situation, it kind of it. It is a mind fuck, because you're like it makes you really second guess yourself and like should I go? Then, like, why is someone making such a big deal of this? And why is someone questioning me like this? And like is this what I should be doing? Like should I take time off? Or like am I supposed to do that? Yes, you are allowed to, everyone is allowed to, no matter what your job is. If you had a job, if you had a corporate job, if you worked at freaking Starbucks, if you worked wherever, you're allowed to have days off. Everyone is allowed that. And, like majority of jobs. You get paid vacation. But also the other thing here and I just want to like say this for context the what they were paying for. They weren't paying extra for these classes. It was, you know, they were actually getting extra. It was fitness classes. They were actually getting extra classes and they wanted a refund. This person like it was just so not right, and these are things sometimes.

Speaker 1:

The reason that I bring this up is because you will experience some things like this in business and it is, you know, it's something that, as a business owner, you will experience. You will experience hard clients, you will experience issues in your business, and it's I think it really comes down to the way that you handle these things and get through them that make you stronger and that really strengthen your business in the end. And you know I just it is so it is so fine if you take a vacation Like I just want to stress that, because I know that we already second guess ourselves doing this and stepping away, and I see so many people that are like, oh, but I need to do a bit of work, and you know, if you really want to, that's one thing, but if you're feeling guilty and really feeling like you absolutely can't step away, step away. I really want to challenge you to try, because you can, you can and your business is not going to fall apart. It's really, really not, and there are ways that you can set it up beforehand so that it does not and everything will be okay and everything will be okay. So now let's go into here's what I would suggest that you do have set up for systems, of course, when you go away.

Speaker 1:

Now this may surprise you. It is up to you whether you want to schedule content and emails when you go away. That's one that I don't believe is absolutely necessary. It's up to you. You like, think about any other business. They close sometimes, like businesses, brick and mortar businesses have days where they are not open, even though I know that you know things have gotten really crazy and some, some places stay open on Christmas, and I also get the idea that you know, not everyone celebrates Christmas and like that's totally fine. I totally, I get that, um, but pretty much every business in the world has days where they are closed. So if you don't post content for a week like it's not going to just kill your business, you will be fine. It'll be fine.

Speaker 1:

If you want to schedule your content and have it posting while you are on vacation, also great, perfect, you can do either, but that is not one that I think is going to be like the make or break for when you go away. What I would suggest that you have is making sure that you do have your landing page for your freebie set up, is making sure that you do have your landing page for your freebie set up, your email sequence that is automated to send the freebie and sell your offer on the backend, whatever offer is linked to your freebie, whichever one makes sense, and the sales excuse me, the sales page that is linked in to your email so that people can go check out your offer. And onboarding so that once they check out at checkout, they are sent all of the information about whatever they bought and once you get back, about whatever they bought and once you get back, you can get started with them. You may want to while you are on vacation, if it's like extended, if it's a week, whatever you may want to add a single email like an automated thing that goes out if anyone does purchase during that time. Just saying you, you know I'm out of office during these days. I will get back to you when I am back on such and such date. That's all you need to do. You do not have to stress out about oh my god, someone bought. Now I have to, like, get online and get all the things together, and you know I have to contact them right away. And no, you're allowed to take time off. You're allowed to take a vacation, it's totally okay. It's totally okay, totally fine. Everything will be here when you get back. Have your landing page set up. Let people come opt in for your freebie.

Speaker 1:

I had a client actually that had a quiz. This was like so amazing. She had a quiz and she went on vacation and came back and refreshed her email and she didn't look at it the entire time. This is like a great example of this. She didn't look at it the entire time. This is like a great example of this. She didn't look at it the entire time. She came back refreshed. She had a whole bunch of email subscribers and they were still getting the emails while she was gone. She didn't have to do anything. That is what you want and that you can step away from and just let it run in the back end and you don't have to worry about it. And nothing happened. Everything just kept going the same. She came back, she picked up where she left off and it was all good. It was all good where she left off and it was all good, it was all good.

Speaker 1:

So I just want you to think about that, because I know, like I have had so many conversations with people about this and I know that it is a really it's a tough one for people to work through and it's it is a big mindfuck. That's a huge part of it is the mindset side. And just know, like your business will be fine, it'll still be here, will be fine, it'll still be here. You can go, your clients will understand the ones that are meant to be here for you and work with you and all of the good things. They will understand and they will be here for you when you get back.

Speaker 1:

It'll you know it'll be fine. It'll you know it'll be fine. Now, if you don't know where to start with, like the landing page, the freebie, automating your emails, that kind of thing I will link my email automation guide in the show notes and you can pick that up. It is free, so you can grab that and you can get it set up for yourself. Check that out, and that is it. That's all for today. If you have any other questions about any of the other systems, you can always send me a message. Otherwise I will catch you in the next one.
